Telco transition delivers significant savings for Goulburn Valley FamilyCare
Goulburn Valley FamilyCare wanted to reduce its telco spend and gain better visibility across its services and accounts. What started with a pro bono review developed into a broader transition across 207 mobile services.
Dog and Bone helped FamilyCare access specialised government telco pricing (VTS), optimise its services and manage the transition with its incumbent provider.
The result is a reduction in projected telco spend by more than 63% over 3 years, plus access to a technology fund for future mobile device refreshes.

"These savings are very exciting, and thanks to the Dog and Bone team for their hard and ongoing work here to get these across the line with our best interests front of mind.” - Alan Keat, Manager Information Technology and Communication, Goulburn Valley FamilyCare
The client
Goulburn Valley FamilyCare is a regional Victorian not-for-profit supporting children, families and individuals across the Goulburn Valley and surrounding communities.
With teams working across multiple locations, reliable telecommunications are an important part of day-to-day service delivery.
The context
FamilyCare was concerned its telco costs were too high and wanted more granular visibility across its accounts and services. It also wanted an independent advocate who understood the not-for-profit sector and could assess the options available beyond simply accepting the status quo from its provider.
We initially worked with FamilyCare through a pro bono telco review, which identified a strong opportunity to reduce costs. The review gave the organisation the evidence to move ahead with a more detailed transition project.
The approach
We reviewed FamilyCare’s telco environment to identify where pricing, plans and services could be better aligned to actual needs. The work included:
reviewing and remapping 207 mobile services
reviewing voice and data services
moving eligible services onto a VTS Government procurement contract
matching services to more appropriate plans
managing the implementation with the telco provider
validating pricing and savings as the changes took effect.
VTS gives eligible organisations access to pre-negotiated telco pricing and contract terms. Combined with active optimisation of services and usage, it helped unlock further savings for FamilyCare.
The outcome
FamilyCare is now set to reduce their telco spend by more than 63% over 3 years, which means more resources can be allocated to the frontline.
They can also access a technology fund, to put towards mobile device refreshes.
And having Dog and Bone deal with the telco provider also saved FamilyCare’s team time and helped make the transition smoother.
“Everything has gone really well from our point of view. The transition was seamless. It’s great value having Dog and Bone’s expertise and patience sitting between us and our telco provider.” - Alan Keat, Manager Information Technology and Communication, Goulburn Valley FamilyCare
To maintain the savings and keep services optimised, FamilyCare subscribed to our Telco Management service. This gives the team ongoing support with service changes, provider management, cost control and reporting, helping keep costs on track as both FamilyCare’s needs and provider offerings change.
