Large Telco Savings Guaranteed to Deliver for mecwacare

Dog and Bone’s telco pricing optimisation project for Victorian, not-for-profit aged (NFP) care provider, mecwacare, is set to deliver more than $800K in savings with a return on investment of 670% over 36 months. As a result, they can invest more in their “care” teams who directly service their community.

'"Dog and Bone's staff are genuine and professional and have a level of ethical responsibility that’s rare and makes them the sort of organisation we appreciate working with. The outcome achieved was even better than expected. They demonstrated expert knowledge, standing up for mecwacare to secure the best prices possible."

- Kendall Kilbride, General Manager IT Transformation - mecwacare

The client

mecwacare cares for over 20,000 elderly and people with a disability each week across greater Melbourne and regional Victoria, through a highly integrated service network of over 3,000 employees and 500 volunteers.

The context

With a fleet of around 1,000 staff mobile services, mecwacare weren’t confident they were receiving the best possible pricing. We conducted a free telco analysis to determine potential cost reduction opportunities.  Finding internal resourcing with specific telco analysis and management expertise is difficult for many NFP organisations. mecwacare recognised the opportunity to augment their internal IT skills with Dog and Bone’s specialist telecommunication procurement capabilities.

Their Goals

At the heart of mecwacare’s driver to engage with Dog and Bone was ensuring their resources were directed towards their community services, while keeping telco costs and overheads to a minimum.

Our approach

Our initial, high-level analysis compared three of the major telecommunications carrier’s charity pricing plans and identified the potential for significant cost savings by migrating mecwacare’s mobile services to the best plans for their needs. We were so confident of the opportunity for mecwacare, we guaranteed achievement of a $400K minimum cost reduction on their telco bills over a 3-year period.

We then thoroughly reviewed their telco pricing and established the competitiveness of key vendors for mobiles under NFP pricing constructs. mecwacare’s existing services and usage were reviewed and optimised to the most appropriate mix of plans, to maximise cost reduction opportunities.

Once mecwacare’s mobile plans had been mapped, we provided migration support, using our expertise with the vendors to fast-track the transition process. For visibility of the process, mecwacare received timely status updates on project progress.

We also provided a mid-project report to forecast the expected savings, and a validation report to demonstrate that all services had been transitioned correctly and savings achieved.

The Outcome

All mobile services for mecwacare were successfully transitioned to new plans and pricing with their existing provider. mecwacare are now on-track to realise $800K+ in savings over the next 36 months. In fact, these savings are predicted to grow as their fleet size increases. And the best part - mecwacare can direct these savings into their community services, keeping telco costs and overheads to a minimum.

Next Steps

Beyond this transition project, Dog and Bone have a long history of supporting NFP’s to manage ongoing telecommunications services. Our independent consulting team have specialised analytics tools, telco and tech expertise, specifically for NFP organisations. mecwacare will continue to receive a positive return on investment, through our Telco Management Services, enabling them to proactively achieve further cost reduction opportunities year on year.
